Why You Should Join ImmunoX

ImmunoX is a community of UCSF clinicians and scientists who recognize that the immune system plays a key role in a widening number of human diseases. With many disease-oriented scientists doing immunological research, ImmunoX membership nucleates these scientists into a community with traditional immunologists. While ImmunoX’s initial membership pulled heavily from immunology faculty, it has grown to expand beyond this initial group to become a major nucleating program at Parnassus campus.

Membership Criteria

There are two available opportunities for UCSF faculty to join ImmunoX, member and associate. Member allows for the full range of ImmunoX benefits, though higher demands of individual participation. Associate has lower requirements for participation and allows for most of the community aspects of membership, though limitations concerning access to various forms of support.

Member

A full-time ranked faculty or equivalent appointment at UCSF
UCSF DEI Champion training completion or equivalent*
Nomination and letter of support by an ImmunoX Member (Sample)
Actively engaged in, or have a new interest in, immunological research, as evidenced by an active publication record in immunology, an active grant that is immunology-related, or an active institutional study within the last year
Sponsorship contributions covered by your department, or division (if Medicine), at an estimated $1.5K/year per member. Some departments have committed funds to become sponsoring departments which covers membership confributions for their faculty. Members in good-standing (actively participating) must participate in the yearly “ante,” a poll of information used to categorize members and their lab members
A two-thirds vote of approval by the ImmunoX Membership Community Committee

Faculty appointment at UCSF

Nomination and letter of support by an ImmunoX Member

* The UCSF DEI Champion training is currently unavailable. We suggest a few alternative DEI trainings offered by the Office of Diversity and Outreach (ODO). UCSF also offers a mandatory training "UCSF Foundations of DEI" from UC Learning Center for all UCSF employees.

Membership Benefits

ImmunoX hopes to address three of the main faculty needs at UCSF: 1) Research, which involves all initiatives meant to enhance collaborative science amongst our members, 2) Community, our efforts to give our members a cohesive community in which they and their lab members can participate and thrive, and 3) Education, a series of teaching and presenting opportunities to enhance the academic strengths of our immunology students and faculty.

Research

Members are able to access research funds specifically dedicated to ImmunoX members, by applying for ImmunoX-funded CoProjects.
Members are able to apply for ImmunoX-funded CoProject Pilots, which are similar in scope to full CoProjects, but are limited to 12 or less samples and do not provide direct personnel costs.
Members are able to apply for ImmunoX-purchased CoLabs equipment that will be housed in and operated by existing CoLabs personnel for the benefit of the larger community.
Members are able to be considered for ImmunoX-subsidized Junior CoLabs grants that will accelerate community access to emerging technology platforms through the CoLabs, including the development of robust standard operating procedures for training, quality management, instrumentation, experiment and assays, and data management.
Members’ postdocs and clinical fellows are able to apply for the Hellman Family Clinical-Translational Research Development Award, which embeds young investigators into the CoLabs to provide a fertile training ground for clinical-translational research.
Members and member labs are able to access the ImmunoX Data Library through which they can study the immunobiology against other immunobiology at UCSF.

Community

Members are eligible and highly encouraged to serve on the ImmunoX Leadership Committee and/or serve on ImmunoX sub-committees and task forces, which allocates an approximately $20M endowment and ImmunoX research funds.
Members can be invited to join large industry-sponsored consortia projects, such as Immunoprofiler V1 (Cancer) and Immunoprofiler V2 (Inflammation) and to access ImmunoX clinical research coordinator and sample processing pipelines to initiate new campus-wide projects.
Members are able to apply for the Sabbatical Assistance Grant to supplement incoming and outgoing sabbatical studies of 3 months or longer.
Members’ female graduate students, postdocs, and clinical fellows are able to apply for the ImmunoX Maternity Support Program to provide resources, such as technician support for up to 6 months, to help with work-life balance.
Members’ female graduate students, postdocs, and clinical fellows are able to participate in the ImmunoXX Women in Immunology Group to plan and administer:
- Annual ImmunoXX Women in Immunology Symposium
- Genentech ImmunoXX Fellowship
- ImmunoXX Quarterly Networking Social
Members are able to attend the all-faculty Annual Luncheon to review accomplishments for the past year and set priorities for the following year.
Members and their labs are able to apply for seed grants within the Community Initiative to enrich and encourage individuals and groups to take on a more active and visible role within the community.

Members’ lab technicians are able to participate in the ImmunoTeX Technician Career Development Program to assemble and share material and pathways important for success in science and transitions to graduate school, industry, and advancement within the academic system.
Members are able to apply for the “Beyond ImmunoX” Symposium sponsorship funds.
Members and their labs are able to participate in monthly social networking hours to meet casually with other ImmunoX member labs.

Education

Members’ graduate students, postdocs, and clinical fellows are able to apply for support under the NIH T32 Immunology Training Grant.
Members’ graduate students are able to access the newly established Computational Immunology Emphasis
- Computational Immunology Emphasis curriculum
- Computational Immunology minicourses
- Computational Immunology hack-a-thons, à la House M.D., where real-world health mysteries are presented and solved
Members are able to participate in the selection and hosting of ImmunoX Seminar Speakers.
Members and their students, postdocs, and clinical fellows are able to participate in ImmunoX Journal Clubs, ImmunoX Seminar Series, and Parnassus Research-in-Progress Seminars (PRIPS).
Members are able to participate in the Internal Faculty Seminar Series.
Members’ postdocs are able to access Program Career Development for Postdoctoral Fellows.
Members and their labs are able to participate in and receive ImmunoX-subsidization for attending the UCSF/UCB Immunology Annual Retreat.
Members are able to participate in the ImmunoX-funded undergraduate student Summer Research Training Program (SRTP).
Members are able to access the streamlined recruitment pipeline for immunology-focused graduate students.
Members are able to access fertile teaching opportunities, such as BMS 204, mini-courses, or immunology-related professional school courses.

Membership Responsibilities

The ImmunoX Leadership Committee performs a membership review every 3 years, at which time inactive members will be retired from the program. Retired members may be invited to re-apply for membership as their schedule and interest allows. To maintain the privileges of membership for the next year, at minimum, each faculty member must fill out before a single set deadline an “annual ante” of information. This is intended to limit the number of these request per year and provide a consistently updated set of data for all ImmunoX functions.

Members must fill out their lab details for the ImmunoX website (http://ImmunoX.org/) before the set annual deadline.
Members must submit all requested documents, including an updated biographical sketch and current and past training records.
Members must update their list of graduate students and postdoctoral associates/fellows.
Members must propose lab members to present at Journal Club and Practice of Science for each semester.
Members must propose lab members to present at Research-in-Progress Seminars (RIPS) for both fall and spring semesters.
Members must submit available dates for to present at Journal Club and Practice of Science.
Members must confirm their attendance at the ImmunoX Annual Retreat.
Members must sign-up for internal ImmunoX Faculty Talks.
Members must suggest a list of speakers for the ImmunoX Seminar Series.
Members must either participate in teaching or list their related contributions.
Members are highly encouraged to support our community groups, ImmunoDiverse, IgEquity, Mental Health Coalition and ImmunoTex by attending faculty meetings and or attending community group events.

Membership Application

UCSF clinicians and scientists with a full-time ranked faculty or equivalent appointment can nominate themselves for ImmunoX membership by filling out the application below. Potential members may also be contacted upon recommendation from the ImmunoX Leadership Committee and asked to complete the application. Applications are reviewed by the Committee.
