Sabbatical Support RFA
As part of ImmunoX’s mission to enrich the bonds of collaborative science both internally and externally throughout the global immunology community, funds are being allocated annually to support a series of sabbatical grants, both in support of visiting scholars here at UCSF and, in special circumstances, as assistance to ImmunoX members traveling to other institutions for the purposes of forging long-term and community-serving projects. UCSF faculty, who are ImmunoX members, may apply for support of a visitor or to support their own travel. The ImmunoX Membership & Community Committee is responsible for reviewing and selecting applications for funding.
Program Eligibility
UCSF faculty who are ImmunoX members as of June 1, 2019, or those with at least three years of membership at the time of application, are eligible to apply for incoming or outgoing funding. In addition, they must demonstrate proof of eligibility within their department. At this time, there are two variations of the Sabbatical Assistance Grant. Both variations require a minimum stay of one month and the endorsement from an ImmunoX faculty member. Incoming applicants should also have the endorsement of at least one CoLab director, while outgoing applicants should have the endorsement of at least another UCSF faculty to attest to the value of the sabbatical. Applicants will be selected for funding based on how closely their planned sabbatical aligns with ImmunoX’s goals for community engagement (see “Selection and Awards” below).
Sabbatical Options
Eligible applicants can choose from only one of the following support options:
This option provides up to $25,000, typically in the form of a round-trip economy air ticket and up to $5,000/month in expenses, in travel funding in support of a visiting faculty member from another institution. The visitor should also be sponsored by an ImmunoX faculty member and at least one CoLab director. Funds will be awarded directly to the visitor for acceptable expenses (travel, lodging, and access to UCSF resources). As part of this grant, incoming visitors must also give two research talks, typically in the form of a CoLabs or CoProjects lab meeting and an ImmunoX informal seminar; one upon arrival, and one at the end of their stay, providing a summary of their research. All expenses must be approved through ImmunoX central administration.
This option provides up to $25,000 in funding in support of a member’s sabbatical activities at another institution. It should be emphasized that this is meant to be supplemental funding, not a comprehensive financing of a faculty member’s sabbatical. Outgoing applicants should be sponsored by another ImmunoX faculty member and at least one additional UCSF faculty. Acceptable expenses would include travel, lodging, and access to location research resources. Funds will be granted directly to the traveling faculty member, though all expenses must be approved through ImmunoX central administration.
Deadline for Applications
Ad hoc applications, pending available funds, may also be taken throughout the year. Completed forms must be submitted to jonathon.wilson@ucsf.edu.

Post-Baccalaureate Research Program
The ImmunoX Membership & Community Committee is responsible for reviewing and selecting applications for funding. The primary criteria for evaluation of applications include but are not limited to:
- Incoming Sabbatical Assistance
- What direct correlations do the research goals of the visitor’s sabbatical have with immunology, immunotherapies, and/or ImmunoX’s collaborative science development?
- Does the visitor bring important innovative scientific methods and/or biological specimens complementing those already in the community? Does the visitor study novel biology and/or bring novel expertise and knowledge?
- What is the relative contribution of the guest’s immunology research to the scientific community?
- How would the proposed sabbatical enrich the ImmunoX community? In what ways might permanent collaborative goals be solidified between ImmunoX and the visitor’s equivalent programs?
- How much assistance is requested and what is the justification for the budget?
- What is the visitor’s timeline of stay?
- What other funding sources, if applicable, have been granted for this sabbatical?
- Outgoing Sabbatical Assistance
- What direct correlations do the research goals of your sabbatical have with immunology, immunotherapies, and/or ImmunoX’s collaborative science development?
- Would your sabbatical result in novel technologies, new insights, untapped samples, or other benefits when coming back to the community?
- What is the likelihood that important and valuable information from your sabbatical would be disseminated back to the community, thus enriching our discovery efforts? What is the relative contribution of the guest institution’s immunology research to the scientific community?
- How would this sabbatical enrich the visited institution? In what ways might permanent collaborative goals be solidified between ImmunoX and the visited institution’s equivalent programs?
- How much assistance is requested and what is the justification for the budget?
- What is the visitor’s timeline of stay?
- What other funding sources, if applicable, have been granted for this sabbatical?
